Illuminated Fascia – M&S Food Hall – Bury

Links Signs successfully completed manufacture and installation of a brand new illuminated fascia for Marks & Spencer.

The illuminated fascia, designed for the M&S Food Hall at their refurbished Bury store, clocks in at over twelve and a half metres long and nearly two and a half metres tall. The illuminated letters alone are each over a metre tall.

The project consisted of several distinct phases, starting with a detailed survey of the location. Architectural drawings provided by the client allowed us to hit the ground running. These enabled our Project Team to establish key dimensions and criteria at an early stage. Next was the turn of our Design & Fabrication Teams to get to work drafting each of the individual elements required.

Anatomy of an Illuminated Fascia

The letters are fixed to 7 folded and powder coated aluminium panels, through an internal ladder frame. Each panel in turn is further strengthened with bespoke slip joints for enhanced structural stability. These also help the panels to withstand expansion, contraction and wind loading.

Each of the 7 individual letters are essentially built-up, rimless, internally LED illuminated items. 100 mm deep descaled stainless steel returns (powder coated black) hold 10 mm ‘Polar Frost’ opal acrylic letter faces in place. Each letter is illuminated using LED modules, internally housed within each letter. The entire illuminated fascia is further controlled by timer switches, giving the premises year-long control over the exact hours when the sign is illuminated.

Due to strict requirements, installation of the signage by necessity had to be carried out at night, between the hours of 6pm and 10pm. Our expert team of Installers used scissor lifts to lift the elements in place and align them exactly before fixing. We then collaborated with the main contractor to connect the signage up to their electrical supply. We think you’ll agree the final result is stunning!
