Vitreous Enamel signage for the Cairo Metro

Project

Cairo Metro – Extreme Weatherproof Signage

Back to Projects

In the Summer of 2020 as the world was in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were working on a large contact for Unilex Signs of Cairo to produce over 400 individual vitreous enamelled signs for the new Cairo Metro Extension project in Egypt.

Cairo Metro Extension Signage

The Cairo Metro Extension of Line 3 is part of the Cairo Metro mass transit system and connect Attuba in east central Cairo to Adly Mansour Metro Station. We worked through Unlix Signs of Cairo on the overall project for the private operator and maintainer of the Cairo Metro – RATP Dev.

Over 400 outdoor weatherproof signs

Links Signs manufactured over 400 vitreous enamel signs for the project including: station name signage, directional and wayfinding signage, emergency signage, and PRM (Persons of Restricted Mobility) signage.

Each sign featured clear dark blue lettering on a white or yellow panel, making them readily legible to passengers. Each sign was manufactured by taking steel panels that were cut on our in-house laser cutter and then forming each into the required dimensions and shape for each sign.  Finally each panel was enamelled, the lettering screen printed and then fired in our on-site furnace to create the extremely resistant vitreous enamel surface.

Why choose vitreous enamel signage?

Vitreous enamel signage is the perfect choice for outdoor weatherproof signage in extreme climates and for mass transport projects like the Cairo Metro. Vitreous enamel is an extremely robust and resistant material that is virtually indestructible. Vitreous enamel signs will not fade in extreme temperatures and climates and even in the heat of Egypt will last for c. 25 years. It is low maintenance because of the resistant properties of vitreous enamel but it also is has an anti static surface that repels dust and dirt menaing less frequent cleaning is required in busy pedestrian areas.

The challenges of working in the Covid crisis

Most of the work for this project was carried out during the height of the Covid crisis which meant various restrictions in the Links Signs’ offices and our factory. Communication with the client at this time was also challenging but we formed a great working relationship as a result of the Covid complications. Logistically the packing, secure crating and shipping of the items using sea freight was also a complex undertaking but the support of an excellent fright company helped ease the safe passage of all the signs to Egypt.
