London Underground approached Links Signs to fabricate a one-off vitreous enamel Elizabeth Line roundel set in a commemorative oak plaque for Her Majesty the Queen, to celebrate the naming of the new line across London that is to be named after her.
The work took place in complete secrecy because the new line’s name was not yet public knowledge. Links Signs’ team included a fabricator, enameler, carpenter and screen printer to craft the gift for Her Majesty.
The Elizabeth Line, currently under construction by Crossrail, will transform travel across London, as well as boost the economy and create new jobs and homes. The new line will stretch over 60 miles, stopping at 41 stations. The new line will serve in excess of 200 million people each year. The Elizabeth Line is due to launch in December 2018, with the full route due to open the following year.
Accessibility will be a key feature of the new line and many stations are currently undergoing upgrades in preparation. Marked routes and straightforward wayfinding are integral to the route. Links Signs is already working closely with London Underground and Crossrail on signage for the new line.
It was an honour for Links Signs to contribute to the naming ceremony. We look forward to continuing our involvement with the Elizabeth Line.
